The Chapel Hill Historical Society is a nonprofit 501(c) community history organization founded in 1966 to research and document the history of Chapel Hill and the surrounding communities, to encourage and assist in the study of local history, and to provide public programs and publications related to the heritage and traditions of the area.
The Historical Society is primarily funded by yearly memberships from donors.
The Historical Society is supervised by a board of volunteers listed below. All Board Members can be reached via email.
One Staff Member, the Office Manager & Archivist, is present in the office during open hours. Currently, the Staff works remotely due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, but can be reached via e-mail.

As a result of the closure of the Chapel Hill Public Library due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the offices and reading room of the Historical Society are also closed to the public for an indefinite period.
